Thermoplastic & MMA

Thermoplastic is the heavy-duty, high-reflective alternative to paint, built for highways, crosswalks, stop bars and any marking that takes a beating from traffic.

We install hot-applied and preformed (hot tape) thermoplastic with Type 1, Type 4, G3 and airport reflectivity options, and MMA colored surfacing for bike lanes and other high-visibility areas.

FAQ

Thermoplastic questions

What is thermoplastic?

Thermoplastic (also called high-reflective paint, hot tape or thermo) is a heavy-duty alternative to standard DOT-certified solvent or latex paint. It is typically used in high-traffic areas such as highways and interstates.

It is plastic that is heat-liquefied and laid with a hot kettle, thermo-laser machine or propane torch. Glass beads applied over the fresh material make it highly reflective. Type 1, Type 4, G3 and airport reflectivity options are available to meet each project's specs.

What is preform / hot tape?

Preform comes as precut rolls or sheets with uniform mil thickness, width and reflective beads. It costs more, but it guarantees a precise application every time.

It is ideal for projects that need ultra-precise results, such as new construction that will go through rigorous right-of-way inspections at completion.

How do you prepare the surface?

Before applying thermoplastic, we blow off or hand broom the application area to remove loose debris that would keep the material from fully bonding to the asphalt.

Can thermoplastic go on pavers or concrete?

Yes. Textured surfaces such as brick or concrete pavers, and polished or smooth concrete, need an extra step: we apply a sealant first so the thermoplastic bonds securely.
